Muslims in Manhattan
September 3rd, 2010
The lead article in today’s New York Times, “New York Poll Finds Wariness for Muslim Site,” provides a sobering account of the opinions of one of the most cosmopolitan people in the world, Manhattanites, towards Muslims in their midst and the religion of Islam in general. The proposal for a 13-story Islamic complex two blocks from Ground Zero has generated a lot of feedback from national politicians and local Republicans, but apparently they are only reflecting an attitude prevalent among residents of the region. A full 67 percent of New York City residents agreed that while the Muslims had a right to build their center wherever they liked, it would be prudent for them to choose a different location. Other poll results show a deep-seated bias against Islam and Muslims in particular. 33 percent of those polled felt that Muslims were more likely to condone terrorism and 20 percent acknowledged personal dislike of this group of people. The poll is also interesting because of the splits in opinion it uncovered. Those with incomes less than 50K, over 45 years old, and Catholic and Jewish New Yorkers were all more likely to be opposed to the Center. These statistics suggest the role of an emotional, instead of intellectual, approach to the issue. Republicans are also more likely to be opposed. All in all, it seems like the city is deeply divided over the issue, and it is up to leaders like Michael Bloomberg to lead us in a more effective manner. |
