Republicans Attempt a Revolution

July 24th, 2013

The lead article in today’s New York Times, “House G.O.P. Sets a New Offensive on Obama Goals,” describes an unparalleled attack not just on the Democratic philosophy of governance but the entire American people.

House Republicans, not satisfied with the obstructions they have already created, are using the power of the purse to gut the President’s spending priorities. But this time they are going beyond the typical give and take of politics to totally or mostly defund priorities that both parties have held in common for generations.

The Environmental Protection Agency is being cut by 34 percent including a denial of the President’s efforts to clean up greenhouse gases. The Transportation and Housing department is projected for a cut from $3.3 billion to $1.7 billion. And the Community Development Block Grants, primarily to help the poor in urban areas, is being cut to a level lower than when it was instituted under President Ford — without adjusting for inflation.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, one of the most effective ways of regulating Wall Street, is also being cut 18 percent, Amtrak is being cut by a third, and the Republicans are trying to eliminate funding for the Public Broadcasting System.

The mind boggles at these irresponsible actions. What are the Republicans in the House trying to prove? When these numbers get more widely known, they will all be thrown out of office, lock, stock and barrel.
