A New Type of Networking

In his book Rain Making: The Professional's Guide to Attracting New Clients, Ford Harding offers some advice about a different type of networking based on a tried and true paradigm: the Christian worldview. Of his 14 rules, these are my favorites:

"Networking is helping people.

You must learn to recognize a lead for someone else when you hear it.

Networking is sincere effort rather than keeping score.

Networking is a sense of urgency and obligation.

Networking is showing gratitude.

Networking is maintaining trust.

Networking requires some of your time selling other peoples' services.

Networking is helping other people learn to network." (see pp. 44-57)

Or how about "The Five Laws for Stratospheric Success" listed in The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea (by Bob Burg and John David Mann):

"The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.

The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.

The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.” (see page 129)
